Washington, May 5: Tensions have surged again in the sensitive Hormuz Strait, a crucial area in the Gulf region. Iran has targeted the United States’ “Project Freedom,” alleging that an attack by American forces resulted in the deaths of five civilians, jeopardizing a recent ceasefire between the two nations.
According to Iranian sources, US forces targeted passenger boats traveling from Oman’s Khasab toward Iran. An unnamed military commander, as reported by the Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, stated that two small boats were completely destroyed in the attacks, leading to the fatalities of five ordinary citizens.
Iran has labeled this incident a “crime” and is demanding accountability from the United States. Tehran has initiated an investigation, which preliminarily indicates that the attack was not on vessels belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) but rather on boats carrying civilians.
In contrast, the US claims a different narrative. US Admiral Brad Cooper previously stated that Central Command’s actions resulted in the sinking of six IRGC boats that were attempting to disrupt American operations. This operation, named “Project Freedom,” aimed to safely escort ships trapped in the Hormuz Strait.
The US argues that its actions were taken in self-defense and to ensure maritime security. However, there has been no official response from the US military regarding Iran’s allegations.
This incident could pose a significant setback to the temporary ceasefire established on April 8. The Hormuz Strait is a vital route for global energy supply, with a substantial portion of the world’s oil transported through this area. Thus, escalating tensions here could impact not only regional security but also the global economy and oil prices.
