Kolkata, June 4: The resignation of Kolkata’s Mayor, Firhad Hakim, has intensified political discussions in West Bengal. Agnimitra Paul, a minister in the West Bengal government, raised questions on social media platform ‘X’ regarding the behavior of Hakim and several councilors associated with the former ruling party.
In her post, Paul stated that Hakim’s resignation and the absence of many public representatives raise serious concerns about public accountability and political responsibility. She emphasized that holding a public office is not merely a symbol of power but a serious obligation to serve the public, especially when the city faces challenges.
Paul noted that Kolkata is currently undergoing a critical phase. With the onset of the monsoon, the city is grappling with issues like waterlogging, drainage management, public health, road maintenance, and emergency preparedness. During such times, citizens expect their elected representatives to stand by them and ensure the smooth functioning of civic amenities. Instead, the public has witnessed a retreat from responsibility. She remarked that political differences and electoral outcomes are part of democracy, but they should not hinder governance and public service.
Agnimitra Paul highlighted the distinction between political affiliation and public duty. While political circumstances may change, the responsibility towards the public remains constant. Resigning during such times sends a message that political equations are prioritized over public welfare. Citizens elected their representatives for the entire term, expecting them to work for the city’s development regardless of political situations.
Paul asserted that true leadership is tested not in favorable conditions but during crises and uncertainty. The city cannot be held hostage to political calculations. Roads, drainage, public services, and civic amenities must continue to function under all circumstances. Kolkata will move forward, development will persist, and public service will continue. This entire episode serves as a reminder that the trust bestowed by the public comes with significant responsibility that cannot be abandoned for convenience.
