Kabul, June 3: A teenager was seriously injured in a bomb explosion in eastern Ghazni province, Afghanistan, on Tuesday. The provincial police office reported the incident on Wednesday.
According to Xinhua news agency, the explosion occurred in the Gilan district. The boy had discovered an object resembling a toy and began to play with it. Suddenly, the object detonated, resulting in severe injuries to the boy. It was reported that the bomb was an unexploded ordnance left over from previous conflicts.
Afghanistan is recognized as one of the countries most affected by landmines and unexploded munitions.
On May 5, a similar incident in Parwan province resulted in the death of a young man and injuries to three others due to an explosion involving unexploded ordnance. Local media cited a statement from Taliban police regarding this event.
According to local Taliban officials, as reported by Khaama Press, the incident took place in Bagram district, where a 20-year-old was attempting to tamper with a piece of unexploded ordnance. The explosion killed the young man instantly, while two girls and another boy were injured and taken to the hospital.
Data released by Taliban disaster management officials indicate that in the past year, at least 96 people have died and 328 have been injured due to explosions involving landmines and unexploded ordnance in Afghanistan.
Khaama Press reported that between April 2025 and March 2026, there were 225 recorded incidents, affecting a total of 474 individuals, including 321 children and 153 adults.
Unexploded ordnance remains a significant humanitarian threat in Afghanistan, particularly in rural areas and regions that were once conflict hotspots. Many remnants of war are still buried in the ground or remain undiscovered. Provinces such as Herat, Kunar, Farah, Nangarhar, and Kandahar have recorded the highest number of such incidents.
In February, an explosion of unexploded ordnance stored inside a house in Farah province resulted in the deaths of two individuals. The provincial police office confirmed this in a statement.
The incident occurred in the Pusht-e-Koh district, where the unexploded ordnance detonated after being struck by an object. According to the statement, both individuals died at the scene.
