
New Delhi, June 3: In a significant development regarding the devastating fire at a hotel in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, the Delhi Police have taken hotel owner Lovkesh Bajaj into custody. The tragic incident has resulted in the deaths of 21 individuals, with many others injured.
The police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including involuntary manslaughter. Investigating agencies are currently examining potential violations of fire safety and licensing regulations at the hotel.
Meanwhile, AIIMS Delhi has provided updates on the injured. A total of 13 individuals were admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Center, including three who jumped from the hotel to escape the flames.
According to the hospital, two of the three individuals who fell from a height have been discharged and are in stable condition. However, a woman suffering from severe head injuries has undergone surgery and remains in critical condition.
AIIMS also reported that among the 13 injured, 10 were Delhi police personnel involved in the rescue operation. These officers were the first to enter the burning building and worked to evacuate trapped individuals. All police personnel are stable and may be discharged soon.
The hospital has received three unidentified bodies, which have been sent to the Burns and Plastic Surgery Department for further processing.
Notably, the fire is believed to have originated from a restaurant operating in the hotel’s basement around 8:50 AM on Wednesday. The flames quickly spread throughout the multi-story building. Rescue teams managed to safely evacuate 47 people, but unfortunately, 21 lives were lost.
Officials have confirmed that the deceased include citizens from Liberia, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Bangladesh. The Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, and disaster management teams conducted extensive rescue operations that concluded around noon.
With the hotel owner now in custody, the investigation will focus on whether safety standards were neglected and if negligence contributed to the severity of this tragic incident.
