
Bengaluru, June 3: The Congress party has announced its candidates for four of the seven vacant seats in the Karnataka Legislative Council. This decision was made public on Wednesday.
The list released by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) includes B.K. Hariprasad, P.V. Mohan, Shivanna Malavalli, and Tippannappa Kamakanur.
The selection of these candidates has garnered attention in political circles, as all four are leaders from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community. This move is seen as a significant political message from the party ahead of the elections.
Among the declared candidates, B.K. Hariprasad and Tippannappa Kamakanur have been given another chance for a term, while P.V. Mohan and Shivanna Malavalli represent two new faces.
Notably, B.K. Hariprasad has recently been appointed as the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. The election of all four candidates will be conducted through voting by assembly members.
The seven seats in the Karnataka Legislative Council became vacant due to the retirement of current members. The notification for the elections was issued on Monday by M.K. Vishalakshi, the Secretary of the Karnataka Assembly and Returning Officer.
Members whose terms are expiring include Govindaraju, Nasir Ahmed, M.T.B. Nagaraj, Pratap Simha Nayak, Tippannappa Kamakanur, Sunil Valyapura, and B.K. Hariprasad.
According to the election schedule, the last date for filing nominations is set for June 8. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on June 9, and candidates can withdraw their names until June 11.
If necessary, voting will occur on June 18 from 9 AM to 4 PM in Room 106 of Vidhana Soudha. The counting of votes will start at 5 PM on the same day, with the election process expected to be completed by June 20.
