Royal Enfield has once again approached the government with a significant demand for change in the motorcycle taxation structure. The company wants the government to reduce the hefty GST on motorcycles above 350cc to 18%, essentially implementing a uniform tax rate across all motorcycle categories.

Currently, India’s GST structure is divided into two segments. Motorcycles up to 350cc attract 18% GST, while bikes above 350cc are taxed at 40%. This means customers have to pay significantly more for motorcycles with larger engines, making them expensive for buyers.

Royal Enfield’s Concerns

Royal Enfield is concerned that if 350cc+ motorcycles remain expensive, the market will shrink. The company argues that such a split tax structure directly harms India’s mid-size motorcycle segment.

According to Royal Enfield, if GST on motorcycles above 350cc is reduced, their sales will increase and the company will achieve better scale. This could also reduce prices of popular new motorcycles in the 450cc and 650cc categories. India could become the world’s mid-size motorcycle hub, but a uniform tax structure is essential for this.

Impact of Uniform GST

Royal Enfield’s argument is that higher taxes and lower sales affect motorcycles above 350cc, which fall in the premium segment. The 40% GST makes these bikes extremely expensive, causing customers to hesitate before purchasing.

India’s Global Advantage at Risk

India is the world’s largest production hub for mid-size motorcycles (350-650cc). If taxes remain high, investment will decrease and international companies may capitalize on this opportunity.

Industry Growth Impact

Lower demand will reduce production, which could cause companies to lag behind in introducing new technology, engines, and models.

If the government reduces GST from 40% to 18%, motorcycles could become cheaper by Rs 20,000 to Rs 60,000. This could lead to a surge in sales of 350cc+ motorcycles.

The uniform GST rate proposal by Royal Enfield aims to make premium motorcycles more accessible to Indian consumers while strengthening the country’s position as a global manufacturing hub for mid-size motorcycles.
