New Delhi, May 13: The Delhi High Court has directed Google and Apple to remove all mobile applications from their platforms that are being used for pornography, prostitution, drug-related activities, and other illegal purposes. These apps are currently available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
The bench, led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia, stated, “We cannot allow an entire generation to be ruined.” It emphasized that it is the responsibility of Google and Apple to eliminate such applications.
The court highlighted the extensive reach of these apps and their direct impact on society, particularly on the youth. Therefore, the companies must exercise utmost caution and vigilance. They must also ensure that such illegal apps are not uploaded to the Google Play Store and Apple App Store in the first place.
According to the court, under the IT Rules, 2021, these companies are obligated to prevent the spread of illegal and objectionable content on their platforms.
This order was issued during the hearing of a public interest litigation filed by a woman named Rubika Thapa. The petition claimed that numerous apps promoting pornography, prostitution, human trafficking, and drug activities are present on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
During the proceedings, Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, representing the central government, supported the petitioner’s arguments, stating that strict action against such apps is essential. He also mentioned that the government cannot block everything globally on its own, which increases the responsibility of platforms like Google and Apple.
