
Mumbai, May 3: Maruti Suzuki has once again outperformed its competitors in the domestic market. The leading car manufacturer in India recorded its highest monthly wholesale sales since its inception in April 2026. This remarkable achievement allowed Maruti Suzuki to surpass the combined sales of Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Hyundai Motor India.
The company reported a year-on-year increase of 25.08% in domestic passenger vehicle sales, rising from 356,113 units in April of the previous year to 445,417 units this April. The impressive performance of the WagonR contributed significantly to this growth.
Rural Market Penetration at 52.3%
Maruti Suzuki set a new record for domestic passenger vehicle sales in April, with 187,704 units sold, marking a 35.33% increase compared to 138,704 units sold in the same month last year. Partho Banerjee, the Senior Executive Officer of Marketing and Sales, stated, “Positive trends in the market continue, driven by GST 2.0, a reduction in repo rates, and income tax relief. Our strategy to enhance our reach in rural areas, where our penetration stands at 52.3%, has significantly impacted overall sales.” The company reported a 39% growth in rural markets year-on-year.

Banerjee further added, “In the small car segment (Alto, S-Presso, Celerio, and WagonR), our sales saw a year-on-year increase of 74.4% in April. In the CNG segment, we sold 76,348 units, marking our highest monthly growth to date, with one in every four cars sold being a CNG model. We also sold 2,006 units of the e-Vitara in April based on our production capacity.”
SUV Sales Surge by 141.65%
In April, Maruti Suzuki recorded its highest monthly SUV sales ever, with 55,065 units sold, reflecting a growth of 141.65% compared to the previous year. The Fronx (18,829 units) and the Victorious (approximately 13,700 units) were the top sellers in this segment. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire sedan also topped sales in April with 23,580 units sold.
Tata, Mahindra, and Hyundai Lag Behind
Driven by the rising demand for SUVs like the Punch and Nexon, Tata Motors’ domestic passenger vehicle sales reached 59,000 units in April, a 30.53% increase from 45,199 units last year. The Punch sold over 19,000 units, while the Nexon surpassed 18,000 units. Mahindra reported a 7.65% year-on-year growth in domestic passenger vehicle sales, increasing from 52,330 units last year to 56,331 units this year.
Hyundai also achieved its highest sales in the domestic market in April, with 51,902 units sold, a 16.96% increase from 44,374 units last year. The SUV segment saw a boost, with Creta sales surpassing 15,000 units and Venue achieving its highest monthly sales at 12,420 units. In total, Tata Motors, Mahindra, and Hyundai sold 167,233 vehicles in April, while Maruti Suzuki led with 187,704 units sold.
