Supreme Court Commends Harish Ranas Family for Organ Donation Decision

New Delhi, May 13: The Supreme Court praised the family of 31-year-old Harish Rana on Wednesday. The court stated that their decision to donate his organs after his death exemplifies humanity and compassion.

Harish Rana had been in a coma-like state for nearly 13 years. In March, the Supreme Court permitted the withdrawal of life support.

Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Vishwanathan were informed that Harish passed away on March 24. Following the court’s order on March 11, he was admitted to the palliative care unit at AIIMS in Delhi.

The family’s lawyer informed the court that Harish’s death certificate has been submitted to the records. He also mentioned that Harish’s heart valve and corneas were donated, as these organs were deemed suitable for transplantation.

The Supreme Court noted that despite enduring immense grief, the family performed a significant and selfless act by donating organs. The court remarked that Harish bid farewell to the world with “love and compassion,” and his donations would bring light into the lives of many.

The court added that prolonging life through machines and tubes for extended periods is not always considered dignified care. This case highlights the limitations of medical science and the necessity to respect individual dignity and wishes.

The bench stated, “This case has taught us all a great deal, even as judges.”

The Supreme Court ordered that Harish Rana’s death certificate be kept in the case records for three years. It also directed that the AIIMS report be maintained in a sealed envelope.

The court commended the doctors at AIIMS, the family’s lawyer Rashmi Nandakumar, and the additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati representing the central government.

The Supreme Court has requested the central government to file a new status report by July regarding compliance with previous directives in this matter.

Harish Rana had suffered a severe head injury after falling from the fourth floor 13 years ago. The medical board had reported that he was in a permanent vegetative state, with 100% disability and a condition resembling paralysis throughout his body. Continuous medical support was required for breathing and feeding, with almost no chance of recovery.

Initially, Harish’s parents filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking the formation of a medical board to consider passive euthanasia. After not receiving relief from the High Court, the family approached the Supreme Court, where permission was granted to withdraw treatment based on medical reports and his condition.
