Mumbai, April 24: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated on Thursday that the significant voter turnout in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections and the first phase of elections in West Bengal can be credited to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Review (SIR) of voter lists.
Appreciating the voting percentages in both states, Goyal remarked, “The statistics show unprecedented voting in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.”
As the BJP’s election in-charge for Tamil Nadu, Goyal noted, “By 1:30 PM, Tamil Nadu recorded a 15 to 20 percent increase in voter turnout compared to the last assembly elections. Given my responsibilities in Tamil Nadu, I am satisfied with today’s voting.”
He attributed the rise in voter numbers to the SIR process, stating, “While we typically see lower turnout in assembly elections, this increase reflects the removal of fraudulent and deceased voters through SIR, along with technological improvements in the voter list.”
Emphasizing the importance of this process in West Bengal, he added, “In Bengal, an honest process has effectively removed fraudulent voters, many of whom were not even Indian citizens.”
He further stated, “This will inspire citizens to raise their voices. This time, their votes will truly matter.”
Reiterating the BJP’s electoral promise to remove illegal immigrants in Bengal, he emphasized that fraudulent voters and illegal immigrants have already been purged from the voter list, with plans to expel them from the country. He declared, “We are entering this election with that promise.”
Expressing confidence, he asserted that the NDA will achieve a complete victory in both West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
Notably, by 5 PM on Thursday, West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of 89.93%, the highest in the state in the last 15 years since 2011, which marked the end of the 34-year-long Left Front government and the beginning of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government.
In Tamil Nadu, the voter turnout by 5 PM stood at 82.24%, surpassing the 74% recorded in the 2021 elections.
