Assam on Track to Become Power Surplus State, Says Chief Minister Sarma

Guwahati, May 22: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the state is steadily progressing towards becoming a power surplus region. This transformation is supported by significant investments aimed at strengthening energy infrastructure and ensuring a reliable power supply.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, CM Sarma revealed that Assam has set an energy infrastructure target of ₹14,202 crores by 2035, with four major projects currently underway across the state, amounting to ₹6,235 crores.

He stated, “Assam is gradually moving towards becoming self-reliant in electricity. With an energy vision of ₹14,202 crores and ongoing projects worth ₹6,235 crores, we are enhancing our power infrastructure to promote development and ensure reliable electricity supply for our people.”

According to officials, the state government is focusing on increasing power production capacity, improving the transmission network, and modernizing the distribution system to meet the rising electricity demand in both urban and rural areas.

Under its long-term energy security and sustainability roadmap, the government is also emphasizing renewable energy initiatives, including solar power projects.

To enhance energy efficiency and boost overall supply capacity, hydro and thermal power projects are being upgraded.

Officials noted that Assam’s energy vision aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply across the state, thereby promoting industrial growth, infrastructure expansion, and improving quality of life.

These efforts to become self-reliant in electricity are expected to strengthen Assam’s position as a preferred destination for investment in the Northeast. The state has witnessed a continuous rise in electricity demand due to rapid urbanization, industrial expansion, and increasing access to electricity in households in recent years.

The government is implementing several projects to upgrade substations, transmission corridors, and rural electrification infrastructure.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly emphasized the importance of strengthening the power sector to support Assam’s comprehensive economic development plans and future industrial expansion.

Officials further stated that several energy projects are currently at various stages of development and are expected to significantly enhance the state’s power production and transmission capabilities in the coming years.
