
New Delhi, May 22: Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is often referred to as a ‘silent killer’ due to its ability to cause significant harm without clear symptoms. This condition gradually damages various organs in the body. Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to severe complications such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.
According to the World Health Organization, hypertension is a leading cause of premature death among individuals under 70. Alarmingly, this issue is increasingly affecting the younger generation. Factors contributing to this rise include busy lifestyles, irregular diets, stress, lack of physical activity, and excessive salt intake.
Hypertension poses serious risks. When blood pressure remains consistently high, it exerts pressure on blood vessels, forcing the heart to work harder. Over time, this can weaken the heart muscles, significantly increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Additionally, the likelihood of kidney damage also rises. The challenge is that many individuals are unaware of their high blood pressure, as symptoms often manifest late. This is why it is termed a silent killer. Health experts emphasize the necessity of daily blood pressure monitoring.
Experts recommend regular blood pressure checks to detect hypertension early and manage it effectively. Individuals should develop the habit of checking their blood pressure at home, ideally once or twice a day, using clinically validated monitoring devices for accurate readings. If blood pressure consistently measures 140/90 mmHg or higher, it is crucial to consult a doctor immediately.
Doctors believe that regular monitoring can help control the condition in its early stages. A healthy diet, regular exercise, weight management, reduced salt intake, and stress management are also effective strategies to prevent hypertension.
