CSK Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad Fined ₹24 Lakhs for Slow Over Rate

New Delhi, May 22: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been fined ₹24 lakhs due to slow over rate during the match against Gujarat Titans (GT). CSK faced a significant defeat, losing by 89 runs.

This marks the second instance in IPL 2026 where CSK failed to complete their 20 overs in the allotted time. As a result, Gaikwad and the rest of the playing XI, including the impact player, were penalized ₹6 lakhs or 25% of their match fees. They were found guilty under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.

At the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat Titans batted first, scoring 229 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their 20 overs. Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill provided a strong start, amassing 125 runs for the first wicket in just 12.2 overs.

Sudharsan played a remarkable innings, scoring 84 runs off 53 balls, including 7 fours and 4 sixes. Gill contributed 64 runs from 37 balls, hitting 7 fours and 3 sixes. Jos Buttler also made a quick impact, scoring 57 runs off just 27 balls with 5 fours and 4 sixes.

In response, CSK’s entire team collapsed for just 140 runs while chasing the target of 230. Sanju Samson was dismissed without scoring, and Ruturaj Gaikwad managed only 16 runs. Matthew Short added 24 runs from 14 balls, while Urvil Patel was out for a duck, and Kartik Sharma scored just 19 runs.

Dewald Brevis also struggled, returning to the pavilion after scoring only 8 runs. Shivam Dube showcased some fireworks towards the end, scoring 47 runs off 17 balls, but lacked support from his teammates. With this defeat, CSK’s journey in IPL 2026 has come to an end.
