TMC Union Leader Arrested for Intimidating Voters in West Bengal

Kolkata, May 22: A leader associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) trade union was arrested late last night on charges of intimidating voters. He is set to appear in court on Friday, where he will likely be remanded into custody.

The accused has been identified as Sheikh Wasul. Reports indicate that he has previously engaged in similar activities. Typically, he aimed to create a political atmosphere favorable to the TMC through such actions.

According to police, the accused primarily worked for the TMC labor union and allegedly claimed to advocate for workers’ rights. He hails from Rangamati in the Durgapur-Faridpur block of the Paschim Bardhaman district.

Police stated that the accused usually intensified his efforts to sway public opinion in favor of the TMC as elections approached. A specific plan was reportedly devised for this purpose. During elections, he would intimidate voters to influence their decisions. He coerced them into voting for the TMC by promising jobs, threatening those who refused to comply.

As elections drew near, he made efforts to contact residents, warning them that they must vote for the TMC under any circumstances.

Sources indicate that several complaints were filed against him, prompting police action that led to his arrest.
