Coming off a defeat against America’s youngest Grandmaster Abhimanyu Mishra in the previous round, Gukesh once again pushed for victory in a drawn position, only to falter and pay the price. With a 50% score so far, he will now need to win at least four of his remaining five games to stay in contention.

Erigaisi, Nihal and Mishra in Strong Position

Iran’s Parham Maghsoodloo continues to lead the standings, but India’s Arjun Erigaisi held him to a draw with black pieces in an impressive display, remaining just half a point behind at 4.5 points. Erigaisi is now firmly in the title race.

Joining him in the joint second spot with 4.5 points each are Abhimanyu Mishra (USA), Matthias Bluebaum (Germany) and India’s Nihal Sarin, who capitalized on Poland’s Szymon Gumularz’s mistake to climb the leaderboard.

Praggnanandhaa Held, Vaishali Shines

Top seed R. Praggnanandhaa had to settle for a hard-fought draw against Azerbaijan’s Rauf Mamedov, missing out on a crucial full point. Meanwhile, his sister R. Vaishali continued her impressive run in the women’s section, defeating Azerbaijan’s Ulvia Fataliyeva to remain in joint lead alongside FIDE representative Kateryna Lagno.

Playing with black, Vaishali displayed aggressive attacking play and converted her advantage in a rook-and-pawn endgame, making full use of her extra pawn.

Prize Fund and Next Round

After six intense rounds, players will get a rest day on Wednesday. The action will resume on Thursday with both the men’s and women’s sections competing for a total prize fund of $855,000 and coveted spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament.
