New Delhi, May 20: A nationwide strike by pharmacists demanding a ban on online drug sales has had mixed results across various regions. While most chemists closed their shops, some remained open. Customers, however, expressed support for online drug sales.
The All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) called for the strike, leading to the closure of many shops in Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. In Tamil Nadu’s Viluppuram district, around 1,100 medical stores were shut down. Similarly, in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, chemists held a one-day strike, affecting approximately 850 wholesale and retail outlets.
However, some shops in certain areas of Delhi stayed open. One chemist mentioned, “Our shop is located outside a hospital. We were informed that patients were facing difficulties. Therefore, we decided to keep our medical store open.” He also voiced opposition to online drug sales.
Another chemist added, “Due to our location outside the hospital, we had to keep our shop open. We operate 24/7 because patients come from far and wide. If all shops close, it will create more problems for patients.”
Meanwhile, customers were seen supporting online drug sales. One customer stated, “Buying drugs online offers discounts and timely delivery. There are no charges for ordering online, making it very beneficial. In emergencies, offline drugs are still available. Therefore, both options are good for customers.”
However, Kailash Singh Rajput, a minister in the Uttar Pradesh government, criticized the pharmacists’ strike against online drug sales. He remarked, “The strike by medical professionals is entirely wrong. Ordering drugs online causes less hassle for customers and is often cheaper. By striking, chemists are doing a disservice to the poor.”
