Lucknow, May 20: A serious controversy has erupted at Lucknow University (LU). Following the circulation of an audio recording between a B.Sc. third-year student and Assistant Professor Dr. Paramjeet Singh from the Zoology department, the university administration took immediate action to suspend him.
The decision was made during an emergency meeting of the executive council. An interim report from a three-member high-level disciplinary committee found Dr. Singh prima facie guilty of four serious charges. According to the report, he allegedly attempted sexual exploitation by enticing the student with a paper leak, violated the teacher conduct regulations, engaged in mental harassment, and shared confidential exam information.
The investigation also revealed that the accused admitted to sharing confidential exam information before the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).
Following the audio leak, students affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a vigorous protest on campus. As the situation escalated, police arrived at the scene. An FIR regarding the paper leak was filed at the Hussain Ganj police station based on a complaint from the university’s examination controller. The accused teacher was taken into custody and subsequently sent to jail the next day.
The university administration stated that the accused’s behavior has severely damaged the institution’s reputation, social standing, and academic integrity. The report also noted violations of the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations from 2015 and the Vishaka Guidelines.
The administration has issued a charge sheet to Dr. Paramjeet Singh, instructing him to provide a written explanation within 15 days. Failure to submit a satisfactory response within the stipulated time may lead to termination of his services.
This incident has proven to be highly sensitive for Lucknow University. Students are expressing outrage, and several organizations are demanding the teacher’s dismissal. Meanwhile, the university administration has adopted a firm stance, asserting that ensuring women’s safety and maintaining the integrity of examinations are their top priorities.
