New Delhi, May 20: The Indian tradition of yoga includes several vital postures aimed at enhancing bodily growth and balancing energy flow. Among these, ‘Malasana’ stands out as an effective yoga pose.
Regular practice of this asana improves flexibility and balance. It enhances the digestive system, strengthens the spine, and helps maintain the natural health of the lower body. Additionally, it promotes proper posture and better coordination with breathing.
The Ministry of AYUSH of the Government of India has provided insights into this practice. According to the ministry, Malasana is a yoga pose resembling a squat, where one sits by bending the knees and lowering the hips towards the ground. To perform it, one should spread their feet shoulder-width apart and gradually move into a squatting position. In Malasana, the body is stabilized with small, balanced steps. It is best practiced on an empty stomach in the morning, as it activates the digestive system.
This yoga pose not only provides stability to the body but also aids in mental concentration. It activates the root chakra, enhancing feelings of safety, balance, and awareness.
Physically, Malasana strengthens and increases the flexibility of various body parts. It fortifies the muscles of the buttocks, thighs, calves, and hips while alleviating stiffness in the hips, lower back, and ankles. This asana is particularly beneficial for relieving stiffness caused by prolonged sitting.
For pregnant women, it is considered an excellent exercise for strengthening the pelvic floor muscles. However, they should consult their doctor before practicing it.
Individuals with severe knee, ankle, or lower back pain should avoid this pose. It is also not advisable for those who have recently undergone abdominal or hip surgery.
