Heavy Rain Brings Relief from Heat in Tamil Nadu, Warning Issued for Five Districts

Chennai, May 20: Heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and Puducherry, has provided significant relief from the oppressive heat experienced in recent days. Residents welcomed this sudden change in weather.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain for the next two days in five districts: Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, Erode, and Dindigul.

After enduring intense heat throughout the day, Chennai experienced a dramatic shift in weather by evening, with rainfall reported in several areas. Regions such as Nungambakkam, Kodambakkam, Vadapalani, Koyambedu, and Saidapet saw a drop in temperature, making the weather more pleasant and providing much-needed relief to the residents.

Rain was also recorded in suburban areas like Kelambakkam, Padur, and Thiruporur. Commuters caught in the sudden downpour during the evening rush hour faced challenges.

In the neighboring Tiruvallur district and surrounding areas, including Thirupachur, Pandur, Kuppammal Chathiram, Siruvanur, and Pullarambakkam, rainfall was also observed. The unexpected rain led to waterlogging in some sections of the Chennai-Tirupati highway.

Significant rainfall was reported in Chengalpattu district, particularly in areas such as Singaperumal Koil, Maraimalai Nagar, Thiruporur, and Thirukazhukundram. Similarly, changes in weather were noted in Krishnagiri district, where the evening rain cooled down the temperature after a hot morning in Kaveripattinam, Bargur, Allapatti, and Kundarapalli.

Puducherry also experienced heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, in areas like Lawspet, Muthiyalpet, Uzhavar Kadai, Korimedu, Bahour, Usudhu, Mannadi Pet, and Thirukunur, lasting for about half an hour.

Despite the rainfall in many areas, the effects of extreme heat persisted in some locations. Tiruttani recorded the highest temperature at nearly 40 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Chennai’s Meenambakkam, Nungambakkam, Vellore, Erode, Madurai Airport, and Tiruchirappalli also experienced intense heat.

According to the weather department, a cyclonic circulation is present over the upper air in southern coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjacent areas, while a trough extends from the Lakshadweep region to southern coastal Andhra Pradesh.

As a result of this weather system, heavy rain is expected in parts of western Tamil Nadu over the next two days. Meanwhile, Chennai may continue to experience warm and humid weather with partial cloud cover.
