West Bengal Government Begins Handing Over Land to BSF for Border Fencing

Kolkata, May 20: The West Bengal government has initiated the process of transferring land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for erecting fences along the unfenced borders with neighboring Bangladesh.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced this development to the media at the state secretariat, stating that approximately 27 kilometers of land has officially been handed over to the BSF.

He assured that the complete transfer of land necessary for this purpose will be finalized within the next two weeks. The Chief Minister emphasized that the official transfer of 27 kilometers of land to the BSF marks just the beginning of this process. He expressed confidence that, with the support of the patriotic people of West Bengal and the efficient management by state government officials, the entire procedure would be completed promptly.

Adhikari noted that since the new government took office, a series of coordination meetings have been held between the BSF and state government officials. He announced that such coordination meetings will now be conducted regularly. The central government will provide funding for the land being transferred to the BSF.

During the announcement, the Chief Minister elaborated on how the previous government, led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had avoided handing over land to the BSF to fulfill the political agenda of the Trinamool Congress.

He pointed out that India shares a total international border of slightly over 4,000 kilometers with Bangladesh, of which more than 2,000 kilometers is in West Bengal. Approximately 1,600 kilometers of this border is already fenced, while the remaining 600 kilometers remain unfenced. Adhikari criticized the previous government for not transferring at least 555 kilometers of land to the BSF, suggesting that it was a deliberate act to cater to narrow political agendas.

He also highlighted that illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh have significantly contributed to social issues such as law and order disturbances, love jihad, forced conversions, and crimes against women.

Furthermore, he mentioned that the central government had repeatedly requested the previous state government to hand over arrested illegal infiltrators to the BSF in recent years.
