Mumbai, May 20: Renowned Hindi cinema actress Zeenat Aman remains active on social media, frequently sharing intriguing insights about her life, films, and past experiences. Recently, she opened up about a significant moment related to her film ‘Gawahi’.
In her post, Aman revealed that her married life was facing challenges at that time, leaving her emotionally shattered. During this difficult period, her mother provided support and encouraged her to return to acting.
Recalling the shooting days of ‘Gawahi’, she stated, “This film was shot in 1988, two years after the birth of my eldest son Azaan and just before conceiving my second son Jahan. There was a time when I believed that marriage and family would fill my life with happiness. However, gradually, cracks began to appear in my married life, and circumstances changed. I started living with my younger son Azaan at my mother’s house in South Bombay.”
Aman further expressed, “Initially, I wanted to step away from my professional life, but as personal troubles escalated, I felt the urge to return to the film industry. I wanted to rediscover myself not just as a daughter, mother, and wife, but also as an artist. It was during this time that the story of ‘Gawahi’ came to me. It was a low-budget courtroom drama based on a famous play. Producer Vivek Vaswani and new director Anant Balani narrated the story so compellingly that I decided to take part immediately.”
She acknowledged her mother’s role during that tough time, stating, “My mother supported me completely. She took care of my younger son Azaan so I could shoot. Without her help, I might not have returned to films at that time. In the film, I played the character Janhvi Kaul, a woman accused of murder. This role was quite different and challenging.”
Aman also reminisced about the film’s shooting and the cast, saying, “The entire film was shot in Mumbai. It featured artists like Shekhar Kapur and Ashutosh Gowariker. Recently, when I watched the film again, I realized it was ahead of its time, blending mystery, thrill, and emotions uniquely.”
Discussing her character, she noted, “In the film, I played the secretary of a prominent businessman, portrayed as a second woman. The story unfolds after the mysterious death of that businessman. This film serves as a reminder of a time in my life when I was trying to regain my footing.”
