
New Delhi, May 20: Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy chaired a high-level stakeholder meeting on Wednesday aimed at promoting electric buses and trucks across the country.
The meeting saw participation from key stakeholders nationwide, including fleet operators, aggregators, transport sector representatives, financial institutions, leasing companies, and industry representatives from the rapidly evolving electric mobility sector.
The purpose of this consultation meeting was to understand the ground challenges in the swift adoption of electric buses and trucks and to strengthen collaboration between the government and the private sector.
During the meeting, stakeholders shared their suggestions and experiences on issues related to financial support, charging infrastructure, fleet operations, commercial viability, and long-term ecosystem support for electric commercial vehicles.
Senior officials from the Heavy Industries Ministry, including Secretary Kamran Rizvi, were present and shared their insights on the future roadmap for electric heavy vehicle mobility in India.
Kumaraswamy stated that electric buses are set to become the backbone of passenger transport in India, while electric trucks will redefine sustainable logistics and freight transportation.
He remarked, “India is rapidly advancing towards clean and efficient transport. Electric buses are the future of passenger transport, and electric trucks will define the next phase of logistics and freight transport in the country.”
The Union Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to working with industry and operators to ensure that the transition to electric mobility in India is practical, inclusive, and commercially sustainable.
He also noted that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of sustainable development, operational efficiency, and responsible governance.
Representatives at the meeting welcomed the Ministry’s initiative, stating it would boost confidence in electric mobility. The discussion also emphasized the need to create a robust ecosystem for the large-scale deployment of electric buses and trucks in urban, intercity, and freight transport networks.
This consultation meeting is seen as a significant step by the Ministry to promote sustainable heavy transport systems in India and drive change in the transport and logistics sector.
