Promoting Balanced Global Health Development: Insights from Chinas Representative at the 79th World Health Assembly

Beijing, May 20: At the 79th World Health Assembly, held on May 19, China’s delegation head and Director of the National Health Commission, Lei Haichao, emphasized the need for member countries to lead reforms in the global health governance system. He highlighted the importance of addressing the voices and needs of developing nations to promote balanced global health development.

Lei Haichao urged for an increased prioritization of health in political agendas. He called for the integration of health into all policies, stressing the need for diverse plans in terms of concepts, strategies, investments, resource guarantees, and performance outcomes.

China continues to implement its strategy of prioritizing health development, consistently improving the health standards of its people. The nation aims to achieve a healthy China with an average life expectancy of 80 years by 2030.

He also advocated for increased investment in global health development. Developed countries must fulfill their commitments and obligations. Over the past 60 years, China has sent 31,000 medical personnel abroad, treating 300 million patients. Additionally, China invented artemisinin for malaria treatment, contributing to global health equity and access. China firmly supports the central role of the World Health Organization in multilateralism and global health governance, working with various parties to promote a more equitable, rational, and efficient global health administration.

Lei Haichao reiterated that there is only one China, and Taiwan is an integral part of it. This has long been established by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2,758 and World Health Assembly Resolution 25.1. China’s decision to deny Taiwan participation in the World Health Assembly was made by the central government, supported by most member countries and the Assembly itself. Statements from a few countries regarding Taiwan violate international law. China urges these nations to cease interference in its internal affairs and to stop undermining the feelings of its people.
