Beijing, May 20: A recent report from the independent polling organization Pew Research Center reveals a notable shift in American attitudes towards China. This change comes in the wake of President Donald Trump’s visit to China. While most Americans still view China as a competitor, the number of those expressing active opinions about the country is on the rise. This proportion has doubled since 2023.
The report indicates that approximately 27 percent of Americans now hold active thoughts about China, which is a 6 percent increase compared to June of last year. This growth is primarily seen among Democrats and independent voters leaning Democratic. In contrast, there has been little change in opinions among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents.
Interestingly, in recent years, American politicians have frequently exaggerated the so-called “threat from China” and advocated for competition with the nation. American media outlets have also often portrayed China negatively, contributing to a lack of comprehensive understanding among many Americans regarding the country.
The report highlights that younger Americans tend to have a more active perspective on China. Among adults under 50, 34 percent hold a favorable view of China, while 20 percent consider it an “enemy.” Conversely, only 19 percent of Americans aged 50 and older view China positively, with 38 percent labeling it as an “enemy.”
