CM Yogi Directs Action Against Reckless Driving and Road Safety Violations

Lucknow, May 20: In a recent meeting chaired by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, road safety measures were discussed. The CM expressed concern over recent road accidents in districts such as Lakhimpur Kheri, Amroha, Agra, and Aligarh. He emphasized the importance of every individual’s life, stating that fatalities from road accidents are a loss to both the country and the state.

The Chief Minister noted that many accidents occur due to a lack of awareness. He called for special campaigns on road safety across all districts. Accountability for road accidents must be established for officials at all levels. Regular evaluations of progress should be conducted through bi-weekly meetings at the government level. Areas with high accident rates should be identified, and plans should be developed to address the underlying issues.

CM Yogi firmly instructed that reckless driving, speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol will not be tolerated. Strict actions must be taken against offenders. He highlighted that reducing road accidents requires public awareness and coordinated efforts from all departments and district administrations. A solid action plan is essential. Regular meetings should be held among district administration, transport, and police departments regarding road safety. The operation of illegal vehicles is unacceptable, and illegal parking stands must be removed immediately.

Proper parking areas must be designated. Transport department officials should also engage in fieldwork. Accountability for RTOs and ARTOs in the districts must be established. The transport corporation must ensure that only vehicles with valid fitness certificates operate on the roads. Regular health checks for drivers and conductors should be maintained. The CM emphasized the need for school managements to ensure that vehicles used for transporting students have valid fitness certificates. Vehicles that repeatedly receive fines should face severe penalties.

The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of public awareness regarding road safety. Information about traffic rules should be disseminated through public address systems at intersections, toll plazas, and other significant locations. Campaigns promoting the use of seat belts, helmets, and other safety standards should be conducted. Vending zones should be developed in districts to provide a safe environment for street vendors. Regular patrolling on highways, expressways, and busy routes should be ensured, along with adequate ambulance services. Hospitals nearby should be equipped to provide timely treatment for accident victims.

He urged for better implementation of the Chief Minister’s Village Transport Scheme, which would greatly facilitate public transportation. Officials reported a 21% reduction in accidents and a 22% decrease in fatalities from January to April 2026.

The Chief Minister directed the Public Works Department to identify black spots on state roads and address them within a specified timeframe. Appropriate signage should be installed, and speed breakers should be constructed at necessary locations, including intersections. Cleanliness around toll plazas must be ensured, and vehicles should not be parked haphazardly. The public should be regularly informed about traffic rules at toll plazas through public address systems.

Traffic police officials reported that the road safety fund is being fully utilized to provide 25 four-wheeled interceptors, 62 two-wheeled interceptors, and 82 speed laser guns to various districts. Uttar Pradesh is the only state where the Zero Fatality District initiative has been implemented in all 75 districts, establishing 573 critical corridor teams. Each team consists of a sub-inspector and four constables. This initiative has saved 566 lives in the past four months.
