Bhopal, May 20: Wheat procurement is ongoing in Madhya Pradesh, with the government announcing that the process will continue until May 28. However, Jitu Patwari, the state president of the Congress party, has accused the government of mismanagement in the procurement arrangements.
Patwari claims that these issues are causing significant distress among farmers. He described the current government wheat procurement system as a hub of problems and corruption for farmers. Despite having wheat ready in their fields, farmers are facing issues with satellite surveys and AI verification, which are incorrectly showing records. This has led to their registrations being canceled or pending.
He further alleged that there is widespread chaos at procurement centers. Farmers are forced to wait for hours, sometimes days, with their wheat in trucks. The shortage of weighing machines, slow processes, and overcrowding at centers have exacerbated their difficulties. Additionally, a lack of gunny bags has disrupted procurement, putting pressure on farmers to bring their own sacks.
Patwari stated that farmers are not receiving their Minimum Support Price (MSP) payments on time. Many are unclear about their payment status. Due to banking and portal linking issues, farmers are facing financial crises. Complaints about arbitrary deductions based on moisture and quality, as well as rejections of wheat, are also on the rise.
He accused procurement centers of being rife with middlemen and corruption. Small farmers are being forced to sell their wheat to traders at lower prices. Complaints about transactions under the guise of ‘first weighing’ and political pressure are surfacing from various centers. Patwari asserted that the BJP government has completely failed to provide relief to farmers. If the government does not promptly improve the situation, the Congress party will take to the streets in solidarity with farmers.
