Bhubaneswar, May 20: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding the ongoing heatwave in several parts of Odisha. The state is expected to experience intense heat, warm nights, and high humidity in the coming days.
Manorama Mohanty, the director of the Bhubaneswar weather center, reported that temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius at 21 locations across the state in the last 24 hours.
On Wednesday, Jharsuguda recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 46 degrees Celsius, followed by Sambalpur at 45.3 degrees and Hirakud at 45 degrees Celsius. Many other regions also saw temperatures rise above 40 degrees Celsius.
The weather department has issued an orange alert for Sambalpur and Balangir districts, predicting the possibility of severe heat conditions in one or two areas on Thursday. Additionally, orange warnings have been issued for parts of Bhadrak, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Angul, Sonpur, Boudh, and Nayagarh districts.
The IMD also indicated that warm nights are likely to persist in Sambalpur and Balangir, while Balasore, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, and Khurda districts may experience hot and humid weather.
According to the weather department, heatwave conditions could continue in several districts over the next two days, with a chance of light rain accompanied by thunder in some areas.
The IMD has advised the public to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight between 11 AM and 3 PM. They recommend staying indoors as much as possible and taking necessary precautions against the heat.
The department has also issued health warnings, particularly for infants, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
