Washington: US President Donald Trump has stated that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in preventing several major wars, including a potential conflict between India and Pakistan. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump claimed that no other leader has managed to halt such serious and long-standing conflicts as effectively as he has.
Trump highlighted that he resolved disputes that had persisted for decades and stopped new wars from erupting, often without military intervention. He asserted, “Whether people like me or not, the truth is I ended eight wars.” According to him, some of these conflicts had lasted 36, 32, 31, 28, and 25 years respectively.
Preventing India-Pakistan War
Focusing on South Asia, Trump described the region as highly dangerous and said that the United States’ efforts prevented the tension between India and Pakistan from escalating into war. At the peak of the crisis, aircraft from both sides had been shot down, but the situation was quickly defused without the use of nuclear weapons. Trump called this his greatest achievement, claiming that millions of lives were saved through swift and nuclear-free resolution.
He added that Pakistan’s Prime Minister publicly acknowledged Trump’s role in averting conflict, stating that at least 10 million lives connected to India-Pakistan tensions were saved due to his efforts. Trump explained that his approach focused on direct dialogue and applying pressure to prevent prolonged warfare, describing these as major conflicts many believed could not be stopped.
Comparisons and Recognitions
Trump compared his record to that of former President Barack Obama, who received the Nobel Peace Prize soon after taking office. He sarcastically remarked that even Obama was unclear why he was awarded the prize. Trump emphasized that he is not chasing awards but feels his achievements justify the honour, stating, “If a leader stops wars, theoretically, they should receive the Nobel Peace Prize.”
He also mentioned that Russian President Vladimir Putin praised him, acknowledging that Trump ended wars which Putin himself could not resolve in a decade.
Focus on Lives Saved Over Awards
Trump clarified that saving lives is his primary concern rather than receiving accolades. He stressed the importance of preventing tensions among nuclear-armed nations to avoid catastrophic consequences.
This statement comes at a time when Trump is defending his foreign policies related to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Iran, and other global hotspots. He reiterated that his strategy prioritizes prevention and diplomacy over long military campaigns.
