
New Delhi, May 14: Kapil Dev, the Padma Bhushan awardee and President of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), along with PGTI CEO Amandeep Johal, met with Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, Tarunjeet Singh Sandhu. They discussed how golf can contribute to Delhi’s ambition of becoming a world-class global city.
During the meeting, the honorable Lieutenant Governor sought Kapil Dev’s support for the Delhi government’s vision and initiatives aimed at enhancing the capital’s global reputation.
Kapil Dev expressed his willingness to dedicate time and support to any meaningful initiative that contributes to the development, image, and international identity of Delhi. He stated, “Delhi already has a strong foundation for golf. I would be happy to invest my time in any initiative that helps elevate the capital’s reputation and build a robust international identity through sports.”
During the meeting, Kapil Dev presented the Lieutenant Governor with a book on the subject of Sikh Gurudwaras, which he holds dear.
It was also highlighted that Delhi possesses the necessary infrastructure to realize such a vision. This includes prestigious venues like the Delhi Golf Club, which hosts the renowned ‘India Championship’ featuring some of the world’s best golfers, and the Qutub Golf Course, where the ‘PGTI Players Championship’ was successfully held. Additionally, there is an upcoming golf development project planned by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in Dwarka.
Amandeep Johal remarked, “Delhi plays a central role in the story of Indian golf. With its established venues and upcoming facilities, the city has the platform necessary to support a more robust calendar of professional golf events. DP World PGTI is eager to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to strengthen this entire ecosystem.”
The meeting also delved into how golf, tourism, major sporting events, hospitality, and international engagement can collectively add a significant sports-related dimension to Delhi’s stature as a leading global capital.
The Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) serves as the official governing body for men’s professional golf in India and is a recognized member of the International Golf Federation and the International Federation of PGA Tours.
