Beijing, May 14: A recent report claims that China is allegedly supplying Iran with intelligence related to U.S. military deployments in the Gulf region, along with surveillance systems. Additionally, China is reportedly assisting Iran in enhancing its weapon manufacturing capabilities.
According to Asia News Post, “It is not new for the Iranian government to receive weapons and technology from China. However, Beijing faces the challenge of maintaining good relations with other Gulf nations while not upsetting U.S. President Donald Trump, especially ahead of his scheduled meeting with President Xi Jinping.”
The report further states, “China cannot afford to jeopardize its relationships with Gulf countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain. During the ongoing conflict, Iran has launched missiles at these nations, many of which were either made in China or developed using Chinese technology.”
U.S. intelligence reports indicate that China is preparing to provide Iran with new air defense systems in the coming weeks. The report suggests that Iran may be focused on strengthening its arsenal during the current ceasefire, with assistance from its foreign allies.
“If China withdraws now, its influence in Iran could diminish. This is something China does not want, as Iran is considered a significant base for countering U.S. influence in the Middle East. There are also reports that China plans to send arms shipments through third countries to conceal the actual source,” the report notes.
The systems that China is reportedly preparing to supply to Iran include MANPADS, or shoulder-fired air defense missile systems. These could pose a threat to low-flying U.S. military aircraft. These missile systems are user-friendly and operate on a “fire-and-forget” technology, meaning they do not require further control once launched.
President Donald Trump has not entirely dismissed the possibility that China could provide such missile systems to Iran. Speaking to reporters, Trump stated, “If China does this, it will face significant consequences.”
The report also mentions that Iran’s IRGC has been granted access to a commercial ground station network operated by a Chinese satellite service company. This network spans several parts of Asia. The satellite has captured images of various airbases and other sites in the Middle East that Iran has targeted with missile strikes, including Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Air Base, where an American aircraft was damaged.
It was reported that this satellite monitored activities at Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, areas around the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain, and the Erbil Airport in Iraq. The IRGC claimed to have targeted these locations during its operations.
The report concludes, “Western intelligence agencies believe that no Chinese company can provide such satellite access to Iran without government approval. Chinese officials are offering intelligence assistance to Iran, but the aim is to keep the government’s direct involvement under wraps.”
