R. Ashok Criticizes Congress for Reviving Hijab Issue to Secure Votes

Bengaluru, May 14: R. Ashok, the leader of the opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, has launched a scathing attack on the Congress government. He criticized the government’s decision to revoke the 2022 uniform order and allow limited traditional and religious symbols, including hijabs, in schools and colleges.

In a strong statement, Ashok alleged that the Congress government has revived the hijab issue as a strategy to appease minority voters following the recent by-elections in Davanagere. He described this move as damage control aimed at preserving the ruling party’s vote bank.

Ashok accused the Siddaramaiah government of resorting to divisive politics to divert attention from its governance failures. He stated, “The Congress government, rattled by the impact of the Davanagere by-elections and the growing anger among minority voters, has once again turned to its old divisive politics.”

He further claimed that while Karnataka grapples with issues like inflation, corruption, farmer suicides, and deteriorating law and order, the government is focusing on religious issues for political gain. “This is not about rights. It is a calculated political bribe to appease a specific community that has recently expressed its discontent,” he added.

Ashok also accused the government of ignoring court rulings on the matter. He referenced the Karnataka High Court’s 2022 decision, which upheld the uniform dress code in educational institutions. He asserted that the Congress government is showing contempt for the judiciary by overturning the previous order.

“The High Court clearly stated that educational institutions should be centers of discipline and equality, not platforms for religious displays,” he remarked.

The BJP leader also accused the Congress government of adopting selective secularism. He pointed out that while the government allows hijabs in the name of freedom, it opposes the saffron shawl.

He warned that the Congress government is engaging in minority appeasement politics akin to that of West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress, cautioning that such policies could harm social harmony. He concluded by stating that the Congress is jeopardizing students’ futures by turning schools into laboratories of religious division for a few extra votes.

It is noteworthy that the Karnataka government recently issued new guidelines, revoking the uniform order from February 5, 2022. Under these guidelines, students in state schools and colleges are now permitted to wear hijabs, turbans, sacred threads, and rudraksha beads alongside the prescribed uniform.
