Strengthening India-Russia Ties: Key Discussions Between Jaishankar and Lavrov

New Delhi, May 14: Significant discussions aimed at reinforcing the strategic partnership between India and Russia took place on Wednesday in New Delhi. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to exchange views on various critical topics, including trade, energy, connectivity, science and technology, and global issues.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Dr. Jaishankar stated, “On Wednesday evening, I had a meaningful exchange of ideas with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New Delhi. Our discussions covered several aspects of the India-Russia ‘special and privileged strategic partnership,’ including trade and investment, energy and connectivity, science and technology, and facilitating the movement of skills and talent. We also addressed other global and multilateral issues of mutual interest.”

Earlier, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced that Lavrov arrived in Delhi to participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, where he was welcomed upon his arrival.

Before this meeting, Dr. Jaishankar engaged with Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and Maldives’ Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam during the BRICS Summit 2026. These discussions focused on bilateral, regional, and global issues, as well as cooperation concerning India’s ‘Neighborhood First’ policy and BRICS presidency.

On the same day, Dr. Jaishankar also met with South Africa’s Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola. He expressed his satisfaction on social media, saying, “It was a pleasure to meet South Africa’s Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola on Wednesday. We reviewed various aspects of our strategic partnership and discussed multilateral issues of mutual interest. We agreed on the need to enhance our dialogue through institutional mechanisms.”

According to the Foreign Ministry, the arrival of the foreign ministers at Bharat Mandapam is scheduled for 10 AM on May 14. The first session will commence at 10:30 AM, followed by a joint meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at ‘Seva Teerth’ at 1 PM. The second session will begin at 3:10 PM, and Dr. Jaishankar will host a dinner at Bharat Mandapam at 7 PM. The third session will start at 10 AM on May 15, the day following the summit.
