Bhubaneswar, May 14: Bhubaneswar police arrested four individuals on Wednesday in connection with a gang rape and blackmail case involving an engineering college student. Among the arrested is the victim’s alleged boyfriend.
The suspects have been identified as Shubhankar Padhi (21) from Balasore district, Ranjan Behera (24) from Jajpur district, Ratiranjan Tarai (23), and Sipun Behera (23) from Khurda district.
Both Shubhankar and the victim are students at a private engineering college. According to the victim’s complaint, about 20 days ago, Shubhankar took her to Ranjan’s rented house in the Kaimatia area of the Info Valley police station for dinner.
At that time, Shubhankar’s three friends were also present. The victim alleged that after consuming a cold drink, she began to feel dizzy and lost consciousness.
She claims that while she was unconscious, the accused sexually assaulted her. Upon regaining consciousness, she realized that she had been physically assaulted and sexually abused.
The accused allegedly recorded explicit videos of the victim on their mobile phones. According to the police, Ranjan Behera later used these videos to blackmail her, leading to multiple instances of sexual assault. This incident occurred in April at an apartment near the Info Valley police station.
Following the victim’s complaint on Tuesday, police registered a case under sections 64(2)(M), 70(1), and 351(2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as section 66E of the IT Act.
All four suspects have been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing. They were presented in court on Wednesday, where they were remanded to judicial custody.
It is noteworthy that just a few days prior, the Info Valley police arrested a grocery store owner for attempting to sexually assault an MBA student at a private management college in Bhubaneswar.
