Odisha Transport Minister Advocates Reduced Use of Government Vehicles and Promotes Electric Vehicles

Bhubaneswar, May 14: Odisha’s Commerce and Transport Minister, Vibhuti Bhushan Jena, has welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for austerity amid the global economic crisis. He has decided to reduce the use of government vehicles personally and has urged both department officials and the public to conserve fuel and promote electric vehicles (EVs).

Minister Jena stated on Wednesday that he has significantly minimized the unnecessary use of his personal convoy and government vehicles. He has encouraged departmental officials to use government vehicles only for essential tasks and to adopt other fuel conservation measures.

He remarked, “Given the current economic situation, reducing fuel consumption is the responsibility of every citizen. We should all take the Prime Minister’s appeal for austerity seriously.”

Jena described electric vehicles as the future of transportation, highlighting their environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness. He mentioned ongoing state government initiatives to promote EVs and announced that awareness campaigns will be intensified across Odisha.

The minister noted that the government is encouraging electric vehicles through the expansion of EV charging stations, subsidy schemes, and awareness programs. He emphasized the promotion of two-wheeler and three-wheeler EVs to make them more accessible to the general public. He directed officials to take all possible steps to effectively implement the EV policy and announced that awareness camps will be organized in schools, colleges, and public places.

Vibhuti Bhushan Jena appealed to the public to contribute to fuel conservation. Simple habits such as reducing unnecessary vehicle use, carpooling, cycling, and utilizing public transport can save fuel and reduce pollution. The Odisha government is committed to achieving environmental protection and sustainable development goals. Adopting EVs will lower the state’s petroleum import bill and create new job opportunities.
