
Jammu, May 19: A tragic road accident occurred in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to eleven others.
According to police reports, a passenger bus overturned on the Gool-Sangaldan road near the Sangaldan area of the district. The incident took place when the bus, bearing registration number JK02CU-7482, reportedly lost control and flipped over at the roadside.
Emergency teams, local residents, and police quickly initiated rescue operations, transporting the injured to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Authorities confirmed that one passenger lost their life, while several others sustained injuries, with some in critical condition. The police have taken cognizance of the incident.
Earlier, on May 16, a road accident in Pahalgam claimed the lives of a tourist couple from Gujarat, while two others were injured. Officials stated that the accident occurred when a taxi carrying the tourists skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge.
The deceased tourists were identified as Bavin Bhavsar, the son of Mahesh Bhavsar, who was brought dead to the sub-district hospital in Pahalgam, and his wife, Avani Bhavsar, who later succumbed to severe injuries.
The hilly districts of the Union Territory, including Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban, have frequently made headlines due to recurring road accidents. Poor road conditions, speeding, overloading, and road rage are cited as contributing factors.
The traffic department has deployed special investigation teams to monitor and take action against rule violators. In some cases, vehicles are driven by minors or individuals without valid driving licenses. Penalties for unauthorized driving include cancellation of registration certificates, vehicle seizures, and imprisonment for parents if minors are found driving.
Petrol stations have been instructed not to serve fuel to motorcyclists who arrive without crash helmets. The traffic department is also conducting road safety awareness classes to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding.
