Congress Rejoins Tamil Nadu Cabinet After 59 Years: KC Venugopal

New Delhi, May 20: The Congress party is making a significant return to the Tamil Nadu Cabinet after a gap of 59 years. KC Venugopal, the party’s General Secretary (Organization), announced that two Congress legislators will be joining the cabinet.

Venugopal shared the news on the social media platform ‘X’, stating that the party’s national president, Mallikarjun Kharge, has approved the inclusion of Congress legislators Advocate Rajesh Kumar and Thiru P. Vishwanathan in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet. They are set to take their oaths as ministers on Thursday.

“This is a historic moment for us, as Congress is rejoining the Tamil Nadu Cabinet after 59 years. I extend my best wishes to them. We are confident they will fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people of Tamil Nadu and work towards realizing the welfare-oriented vision set forth by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi,” he added.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly consists of 234 members. According to Article 164(1A) of the Indian Constitution, the total number of ministers in a state (including the Chief Minister) cannot exceed 15 percent of the total assembly membership. This means that the Tamil Nadu Council of Ministers can have a maximum of 35 ministers.

Currently, Chief Minister Vijay and nine ministers have taken their oaths, leaving room for 25 more members to join the cabinet. Political discussions regarding increased representation for coalition partners and allied groups have already begun.

Recently, the Vijay government passed a floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The Chief Minister presented a confidence motion, receiving support from 144 legislators, while only 22 votes were cast against it.

The TVK government in Tamil Nadu has garnered support from parties other than Congress. In the recent assembly elections, TVK emerged as the largest party but lacked a clear majority, necessitating support from other political parties.
