Washington, May 20: U.S. President Donald Trump stated that negotiations with Iran are taking longer than expected. He indicated that if diplomatic efforts fail, the U.S. may consider tougher options.
During a press briefing at the White House, Trump expressed a preference for limited tensions or violence over a large-scale war in the region.
He remarked, “Ideally, I would prefer fewer lives lost rather than many. We can approach this in different ways, but I want to minimize the damage.”
Trump claimed that rising anger among the Iranian populace is due to poor economic and social conditions.
“There is significant discontent in Iran as people are living in dire circumstances. We are seeing a level of dissatisfaction that we have not observed before,” he noted.
When asked about the prolonged negotiations, Trump compared them to the lengthy U.S. military deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq.
“You were in Afghanistan for ten years. You were also in Iraq for a long time. There was a seven-year deployment in Korea,” he said.
Trump also pointed out that recent U.S. military operations have resulted in fewer American casualties compared to previous wars.
“In other conflicts, millions lost their lives. Here, we have lost 13 people. However, even 13 is too many,” he added.
The U.S. President claimed that significant strategic successes have been achieved without prolonged military occupations.
“We essentially gained control over Iran,” he stated, though he did not provide further details on this assertion.
