
New Delhi, May 20: Ensuring children remain healthy and active is a top priority for every parent. However, iron deficiency can significantly impact their development. According to the National Health Mission, anemia in children under two can adversely affect brain development and learning abilities. Therefore, providing a balanced and nutritious diet is crucial.
Health experts believe that proper nutrition during childhood enhances both physical and mental development. Conversely, a lack of iron can lead to weakness, lethargy, and reduced activity levels in children. Prolonged anemia can negatively affect memory, learning capacity, and overall mental growth.
The National Health Mission (NHM) recommends incorporating iron-rich foods into children’s daily meals to prevent anemia. Foods such as leafy greens, lentils, chickpeas, jaggery, pomegranates, and dates are beneficial. Additionally, fruits rich in vitamin C, like oranges, amla, and lemons, help improve iron absorption in the body.
Experts advise that complementary feeding should begin after six months of age. A nutritious diet alongside breastfeeding provides essential nutrition for children. Balanced meals also strengthen their immune systems, keeping them healthier.
Furthermore, the NHM emphasizes that children aged six months to 59 months should receive iron and folic acid (IFA) syrup supplements as per medical advice. This helps combat iron deficiency and prevent anemia.
It is vital to focus on children’s dietary habits from an early age, as proper nutrition and regular care can protect them from issues like anemia.
