Mumbai, May 20: In the arid regions of Kutch, Gujarat, camel milk is emerging as an alternative source of livelihood for hundreds of families dependent on animal husbandry.
Previously, camel milk was sold at very low prices. However, innovative initiatives by the state government have improved the situation for these farmers.
The recently established ‘Sarhad Dairy’ has created an organized system for purchasing milk, helping camel herders receive between 50 to 55 rupees per liter. According to the herders, they now face no difficulties in selling their milk or receiving payments.
Camel herder Aashabhai Rabari stated, “Life was very tough for us before. But with government support and guidance from the dairy cooperative, our camels’ lives have been saved; otherwise, no one cared for us. Now, life has become much easier.”
Devbhai Rabari added, “We now send camel milk to the dairy and receive 50 rupees per liter in return.”
Since camel herders often lack a permanent residence, they wander in search of fodder, making it challenging to sell milk. However, Sarhad Dairy has simplified this process.
This dairy is the first of its kind in the country that not only purchases camel milk but also produces various products from it, such as milk, cheese, and ice cream.
In the fiscal year 2025-26, Sarhad Dairy purchased an average of 5,158 liters of milk daily, compared to 4,754 liters in 2024-25. Last year, the dairy paid camel herders approximately 8.72 crore rupees for their milk, while this year, the total payment has increased to about 9.60 crore rupees.
This initiative is positively impacting the standard of living in the region.
Camel milk is often referred to as a ‘superfood’ and is rich in medicinal properties. It is considered highly beneficial for treating serious illnesses such as tuberculosis, diabetes, autism, and allergies. There is significant demand for it both domestically and internationally.
