Thiruvananthapuram, May 12: Tensions are escalating within the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala following a significant electoral defeat. The coalition, which includes the CPI and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), is now facing new fractures.
The internal dispute over the position of the opposition’s deputy leader has transformed into a larger conflict within the LDF. This clash is no longer limited to positions; it has evolved into a broader struggle for influence, dominance, and political space within the coalition after a crushing defeat.
Interestingly, amidst this turmoil, LDF convenor T.P. Ramakrishnan has been publicly mocking Congress for delaying the announcement of their chief ministerial candidate, even as discontent and tension rise within his own alliance.
The friction began when CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam openly demanded that the deputy leader position be allocated to the CPI. Reports indicate that this public statement upset the CPI(M), leading Ramakrishnan to assert that such matters should be discussed in coalition meetings rather than aired in public.
During the decade-long governance of the LDF under Pinarayi Vijayan, the CPI has demonstrated its strength on two significant occasions, compelling the Chief Minister to soften or change his stance. Although the CPI has largely acted as a junior partner, it has repeatedly signaled its unwillingness to completely bow to the CPI(M)’s dominance.
The CPI has directly blamed Pinarayi Vijayan’s approach and governance for the electoral loss. This unusually sharp critique from a coalition partner underscores the need for reforms and better coordination within the alliance, according to CPI officials.
