EU Mission Heads Meet Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi to Discuss Strategic Ties

New Delhi, May 14: European Union (EU) mission heads from its 27 member states met with Opposition Leader and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. The discussions focused on the strengthening strategic relations between India and the EU, as well as the current global geopolitical landscape.

The Chairman of Congress’s Foreign Affairs Committee was also present and participated in a lunch hosted by the EU delegation at Santiniketan.

EU Ambassador to India, Herve Delphin, shared insights post-meeting, stating, “Rahul Gandhi and Salman Khurshid, the Chairman of Congress’s Foreign Affairs Committee, attended the lunch organized by the EU HOM. The meeting addressed the growing strategic ties between India and the EU, alongside discussions on global conditions.”

Last week, Delphin highlighted the close relationship between the EU and India, noting that both are among the world’s largest democracies. He emphasized that there has been a significant qualitative and strategic shift in their relations, moving towards a more ambitious and progressive partnership.

On the same day, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised questions regarding Rahul Gandhi’s foreign trips. BJP MP Sambit Patra alleged discrepancies between Gandhi’s declared income and his travel expenses abroad. He claimed that while Gandhi’s declared income over recent years has been around ₹11 crore, his foreign travel expenses are estimated to be around ₹60 crore.

Patra questioned the source of funding for these trips, asking whether it comes from personal funds, other sources, or foreign funding. He expressed concerns about a lack of transparency, suggesting it could pose a national security issue.

He also alleged that information regarding some foreign trips has not been disclosed in a timely manner, raising concerns among security agencies.

As of now, the Congress party has not issued an official response to these allegations.
