Saudi Arabia Launches Dunes League T20 to Boost Cricket Popularity

New Delhi, May 14: A new T20 league is set to debut in the world of cricket, taking place in Saudi Arabia. The league, named the ‘Dunes League T20,’ has received approval from the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation. This initiative aims to provide opportunities for players who remain active in league cricket despite retiring from international play.

According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, the ‘Dunes League T20’ is expected to kick off in October. The league will feature six teams, with matches scheduled to be held in Taif, near Jeddah.

The Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation announced the initial plans for this league at the end of last year, stating that it is designed to put Saudi Arabia “on the global cricket map” and to develop local cricket talent.

Reports indicate that the league will include up to four players who have participated in full-member international cricket over the past two years, thus requiring ICC approval. The top salary in the league could reach $100,000.

Over the past five years, Saudi Arabia has emerged as a significant player in the sports world, hosting major events in football, tennis, and boxing. There have been rumors of a T20 league that could surpass the IPL, although that has not yet materialized.

Saudi Arabia is gradually making its mark in cricket, with the IPL playing a crucial role in this development. The IPL auction process is also conducted in Saudi Arabia. It remains to be seen how effectively the ‘Dunes League T20’ can popularize and develop cricket in the kingdom.
