Kolkata, May 14: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appeared as a lawyer in the Calcutta High Court on Thursday. She was there to argue a public interest litigation (PIL) related to the violence following the recent assembly elections. This move has sparked significant attention.
The Bar Council of India (BCI) has taken notice and has written to the West Bengal State Bar Council requesting detailed information regarding her legal credentials and the current status of her practice.
The BCI specifically inquired whether Mamata Banerjee is a registered lawyer. If so, they asked for her enrollment number and the date of her registration. They also requested information about the validity of her Certificate of Practice.
Furthermore, the BCI sought clarification on whether Banerjee had submitted any notice regarding the suspension or resignation of her legal practice while serving as Chief Minister. If such a notice exists, they requested a copy of that application along with the relevant dates. Additionally, they asked if she later sought permission to resume her legal practice and what the Council’s decision was regarding that request.
The BCI has directed the West Bengal State Bar Council to provide all records and documents related to these inquiries within two days.
On Thursday, Mamata Banerjee arrived at the Calcutta High Court dressed in the traditional black coat and white collar band typical of lawyers. She presented her case before the division bench led by Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen.
Previously, she had also appeared before the Supreme Court in connection with a case related to the ‘Special Intensive Revision’ (SIR) but did not represent herself as a lawyer during that appearance.
