Mumbai, May 14: Bharti Singh is one of India’s most renowned comedians today. Known for her unique style and quick wit, she recently shared her experiences with body shaming on Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi’s show, “Double Date.”
Hailing from Amritsar, Punjab, Bharti made her way to Mumbai and established herself as a famous comedian. During her conversation with Neha Dhupia, she revealed that body shaming was considered normal in her upbringing.
Recalling her childhood, the comedian mentioned that people in her hometown would often label individuals based on their physical attributes. She stated, “If someone was overweight, they would be called ‘fat,’ and if someone had a darker complexion, they would be referred to as ‘black,’ without any regard for how such words might affect the other person’s feelings.”
Bharti also shared that her mother would jokingly tell her, “Stop eating so much, you’ll get fat.” For a long time, she didn’t realize how deeply such comments could hurt a person’s self-esteem and confidence.
She explained, “When I entered the entertainment industry and became known for my comic timing, I noticed that jokes were often made at the expense of people’s bodies or appearances. However, with time and understanding, I decided not to use such words to make fun of others.”
This realization completely changed Bharti’s perspective. She added, “Instead of mocking others’ physical appearances, I started making jokes about myself, ensuring that my comedy never hurt anyone’s feelings.”
