Kolkata, May 14: Rathindra Bose, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been nominated as the candidate for the Speaker position in the 18th West Bengal Assembly.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the nomination on Thursday, stating that Bose, who represents the Cooch Behar South constituency, is the party’s choice for the role. Adhikari expressed hope that Bose’s candidacy would receive widespread support and lead to his unanimous election.
Bose secured victory in the Cooch Behar South seat, defeating the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate, Abhijit De Bhowmik, by a margin of 23,284 votes. The BJP garnered a total of 108,482 votes, while the TMC candidate received 85,198 votes. The vote counting for this seat extended to 23 rounds, with both parties taking turns in the lead. Ultimately, once the BJP candidate gained an advantage, victory was assured.
Voting for the 293 assembly seats took place in two phases, with results announced on May 4. The BJP achieved a significant win, claiming 207 seats and marking its first opportunity to form a government in West Bengal.
In contrast, the TMC, which had held power for the past 15 years, faced losses even in constituencies where it previously dominated. The TMC managed to secure only 80 seats. The Congress party also suffered, winning just 2 seats, despite its decision to contest the elections independently without forming alliances. Voters did not place their trust in Congress candidates.
Recently, a grand oath-taking ceremony was held in Kolkata, marking the BJP’s first government formation in the state, with Suvendu Adhikari becoming the first BJP Chief Minister. The event was attended by Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior leaders.
