Mamata Banerjee Appears in Court Over Post-Poll Violence, BJP Calls It Political Drama

Kolkata, May 14: Former Chief Minister of West Bengal and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee arrived at the Calcutta High Court on Thursday, dressed in a black coat like a lawyer. She was there to present a public interest petition related to the violence that erupted after the elections. This move has intensified the political climate in the state. While the TMC claims it is a fight for the public, the BJP dismisses it as mere political drama.

Following Banerjee’s court appearance, BJP leaders launched sharp criticisms against her. BJP MLA Swapan Dasgupta stated that steps are being taken to uncover the truth behind the horrific violence that occurred after the 2021 elections. He mentioned that the new government addressed this issue seriously in its first cabinet meeting and made significant decisions. Dasgupta asserted that if anyone is approaching the court against these measures, it indicates self-doubt and a sense of guilt.

BJP MLA Lakshmikant also attacked Banerjee, claiming she is merely putting on a show. He remarked that the public has understood the situation, and her political influence has waned.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Ashok Dinda noted that Banerjee has approached the court in various cases before but has never received relief. He warned that if the case regarding the post-poll violence from 2021 progresses, TMC leaders themselves could be implicated. Dinda further claimed that there has been no post-poll violence in 2026, suggesting that anyone thinking otherwise is mistaken.

Humayun Kabir, leader of the Aam Janata Party (AJP), also commented on the issue. He emphasized that the large-scale violence of 2021 is not something people can forget. He pointed out that when Banerjee was re-elected for a third term, violence erupted across the state. However, he noted that since the BJP has strengthened under the leadership of Suvendu Adhikari, such incidents have not been observed.

On the other hand, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh defended Banerjee, stating that she is not just a politician but a true guardian of the people. He highlighted her history of activism and legal battles, mentioning her previous engagements in the Supreme Court regarding the SIR case and her current focus on post-poll violence in the High Court.

Ghosh also indicated that the TMC has raised several questions regarding the voter list, voting patterns, and incidents on counting day. However, he acknowledged that a new government should be given some time to work. He argued that opposing every decision from day one does not appear reasonable to the public. Yet, he assured that the TMC will continue to oppose any misguided policies from the central government.
