Moscow, May 12: Russia has successfully tested the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, according to the commander of the Strategic Missile Forces. Commander Sergey Karakayev reported that the test results met the established technical standards, confirming the decisions made during the development process were correct.
As per the state news agency TASS, Karakayev informed the President that this missile will enhance the capabilities of Russia’s ground-based strategic nuclear forces. It will increase the ability to destroy targets and assist in maintaining strategic security.
President Putin congratulated the Russian military on this successful test, asserting that it represents the world’s most powerful weapon system, comparable to the Soviet-era Voevoda missile system. He claimed that the missile’s strength is four times greater than any existing Western weapon.
Putin noted that the missile can operate not only on a ballistic trajectory but also on a suborbital path, providing a range exceeding 35,000 kilometers. Its accuracy and ability to penetrate all current and future anti-missile defense systems have also been significantly enhanced.
Karakayev confirmed that the test validated the missile’s flight capability, striking power, launch readiness, and safety measures. The first successful launch of this system occurred on April 20, 2022, from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region of Russia.
Putin announced that the Sarmat system is expected to be deployed by the end of this year. The RS-28 Sarmat is an advanced ground-based silo-launched missile system capable of carrying nuclear warheads and a heavy liquid-propellant orbital intercontinental ballistic missile. Reports indicate that development has been ongoing since the 2000s.
Putin emphasized that following the U.S. withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002, Russia had to work on new arrangements to maintain its strategic security and balance of power.
