Priyanka Gandhi Criticizes BJP Amid Khera Controversy

New Delhi, April 9: The controversy surrounding Congress leader Pawan Khera’s accusations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family has escalated, prompting strong reactions from the opposition. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has come to Khera’s defense following police actions against him.

In her response, Priyanka Gandhi condemned the police actions, labeling them as misuse of power. In a Facebook post, she stated that the BJP’s shameless attack on Congress leader Pawan Khera reflects their arrogance and wrongdoing. She emphasized that every member of Congress, and indeed every Indian who believes in the Constitution, stands with Khera, as he faces intimidation from a Chief Minister who has lost his moral authority to govern.

Priyanka’s Facebook post described the police actions as politically motivated and an assault on democratic values. Citing constitutional principles, she sought to rally broader support beyond party lines.

These comments from the Wayanad MP come at a time when Assam police have intensified efforts to locate Khera. Following a complaint from Chief Minister Sarma’s wife, Riniki Sarma, multiple charges including forgery, defamation, and criminal conspiracy have been filed against Khera.

Riniki dismissed Khera’s allegations as baseless and malicious, accusing him of fabricating documents and spreading misinformation.

Meanwhile, Khera reiterated his stance through a video message, asserting that he cannot be intimidated. He accused the Assam government of using police to suppress dissent rather than addressing serious issues.

According to him, investigative agencies should focus on verifying claims instead of targeting opposition voices. The police search at his residence in Delhi and his alleged movements in Hyderabad have further intensified the political battle.

The Congress party has expressed its support for Khera, framing the issue as an attack on democratic rights and freedom of expression.
