Kolkata, June 5: Amid ongoing internal strife within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Rajya Sabha MP Babul Supriyo expressed unwavering support for Chief Minister and party leader Mamata Banerjee on social media. He stated that regardless of the circumstances, he will always stand by “Didi.”
The singer-turned-politician targeted those who previously tried to please party leadership but are now damaging the party out of greed for power. He noted that Mamata Banerjee is suffering from the betrayal of those who once actively lobbied for ministerial positions.
Babul wrote, “No matter the situation today, I am with Didi. Even though I am stepping back from active politics, I will continue to work for Bengal to the best of my ability as a Rajya Sabha MP.”
He also mentioned that he has done nothing wrong in his life, which is why he feels no fear from the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), or the Income Tax Department. “I have never done anything wrong, so I am not afraid of any investigative agency, and I pay my taxes honestly,” he asserted.
Reflecting on his political and personal journey, Babul Supriyo shared that he left a secure job at Standard Chartered Bank at the age of 22 to pursue a career in music. He expressed a desire not to contest the previous elections, as he wished to return to the music industry.
He claimed that he faced unfair and humiliating treatment within the BJP in 2021, leading him to resign from both the party and his MP position. Babul was preparing to return to Mumbai to restart his music career when his old friend and TMC MP Derek O’Brien urged him to join TMC and work for the public.
Following this request, Babul joined TMC on June 3, 2021, after submitting his resignation to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
He noted that despite leaving the BJP, he maintains cordial relationships with most of the party’s top leaders, although he mentioned two exceptions.
In his post, Babul Supriyo also acknowledged his personal relationship with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, noting that both share the same birthday, December 15, 1970. Rising above political differences, he congratulated Suvendu on becoming Chief Minister and praised his initiative to invite leaders of all opposition parties to administrative meetings.
At the end of his post, Babul humorously mentioned that he is currently not allowing anyone to comment on his post. He indicated that he is temporarily removing the Facebook app from his mobile phone, and his team will only share information related to his songs.
