Wang Yi and Michelle Bachelet Discuss UN Reforms and Multilateralism

Beijing, June 5: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with former Chilean President and candidate for the next United Nations Secretary-General, Michelle Bachelet, in the capital city of Beijing on Thursday.

During their discussion, Bachelet shared her views on the international landscape and the role of the United Nations. She emphasized that the UN is an essential platform for the international community to address global challenges. According to her, the world is currently experiencing disorder and uncertainty, which necessitates an increase in multilateralism rather than a decrease.

Bachelet stated that the UN should return to its core principles through reforms, uphold the authority of the UN Charter, and become more action-oriented. She highlighted peace, development, and human rights as the three main pillars of the UN and stressed the importance of their coordinated development. Furthermore, she expressed her strong support for the One-China policy and appreciated China’s contributions to multilateralism and the UN.

Wang Yi responded by stating that Bachelet’s thoughts reflect her deep commitment to the future of the UN and human progress. He noted that China has always been a supporter and active partner of the UN. Last month, he chaired a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, where various parties emphasized the need to strengthen the UN’s role and influence.

Wang Yi affirmed that China will continue to collaborate with all countries to make the UN more effective and empowered through reforms. He also mentioned that the Secretary-General is the highest administrative officer of the organization, and the election of the next Secretary-General will determine the direction of UN reforms and development over the next 5 to 10 years. This election will also impact the interests of member states, particularly those in the Global South. He concluded by stating that China will participate in this electoral process with a responsible and constructive attitude to further enhance the UN’s reputation and activity.
